Now before I get to far into this post please note that if there is a blog post on Friday afternoon and up to saturday night it was a scheduled post as I try not to do any type of work etc in that time frame as I do try my hardest to observe Shabbos. If you followed me from my previous blog site or found my site via my instragram then chances are you already know I am slowly converting to Judism and have been since around Oct of 2022. Now if I make that offical i.e doing everything through a rabbi and a synagogue etc I do not know, fun fact I read Wyoming has a small Jewish population some where around 1,500 people. Besides I have not been 100% kosher in the foods I eat, its mostly mixing meat and dairy *chilli is a big comfort food to me and I have been ill I had a tooth pulled around a week ago*. I do personally avoid eating pork and other non-kosher foods like that when and where I can, however I do not make my kids follow kosher dietary laws as they both have a very limited amount of foods they willingly eat to start with plus my parents are Christains and therefore they do not follow kosher dietary laws. Because of that I am constantly looking for non kosher and Kosher food to be on sale or have good coupons/ digitial coupons. Now with all that said on to the blog post!
Now our shopping has been a bit all over the place and there has not been many good deals that we have been able to get specially on beef a few local to use grocery stores had rib eye steaks for $6.97 a pound for choice which my father says is really cheap and he would love for all of us to have steaks for the 4th of july! Sadly they were either sold out or they do not have enough fat for my fathers liking, to be fair more fat more flavour! Now our local safeway had hostess products for $1.99-$2.99 so we bought some, I don’t think any of hostess brand products are kosher which really sucks because I love the powdered mini donuts and the lemon zingers which they were sold out of the later. Over all this last shopping trip(s) I believe we only saved around $80 in total grant it we did not buy a lot anyway I do know my parents will be going to Riverton in a day or so before the current Smiths weekly sale is over so I may throw in a little blog post about that.
Now I did say recipes in the title and these recipes are very simple some are passed down from my own family and others I have aquired at some point and can not remember for the life of me where I got most of them. I will say where they came from if I can remember as to give credit to the person I got the recipe from.
Swiss Steak. Family Recipe
Now as stated this is a “family” recipe it has been used in my family since my father was younger so we have no clue where it came from but it is simple and it is tasty. You will need: 1 Beef Roast (any cut of roast really will work as this is a slow cooker dish!) A couple of cans of stewed tomatoes enough to almost cover the half the roast (if it cooks down to fast add another can). Salt & Pepper. Salt & pepper your roast and then brown it on all sides in a frying paying with a little oil. After browning add to your slow cooker pot (or if your going to cook it low and slow on a stove top make sure you pot is big enough!). Add stewed tomatoes and cook until done through out and shreds easily with a fork. I suggest serving ith with mashed potatoes but you can try it with rice or noodles.
Italian White Bread. Panasonic bread machine manual.
Ok this bread is dead simple to make with or without a bread machine and is one of my favourite breads to make which reminds me I promised to make a load for my new neighbours so I better get on that this week! What you will need for this recipe: 400g white bread flour. 2 tsp yeast. 1 1/2 tbsp olive oil *I have used avocado oil it’s great!* 1 1/2 tsp salt *I use fine sea salt or Kosher* 260 ml warm water * You may need to add more or less depending on where you are if you add to much just add a little bread flour until it does not feel too sticky and it’s easy to knead* if you have a mixer that has a knead fuction or even a bread machine that does this all for you this is going to be very easy as it’s pretty much throw all your ingredients into you mixer mix and knead it until it easily comes away from the bowl oil the bowl a little bit along with the dough so it does not stick to the bowl and let it rise until double in size which can be 30 mins to a hour depending how hot it is. Bread machine same idead just set it up to a quick white/ rapid bread setting and well your done. If you are doing this by hand well it’s going to be a little messy you can either mix with your actual hand or you can use a oiled wooden spoon or silicon spoon/spatual thing to do the mixing. Once it’s all mixed up go ahead and turn it out onto a floured surface and need for around 10 minutes I don’t go above 15 minutes though. Once your done kneading place in a oiled bowl to rise for 30 minutes to a hour or until doubled in size. knock back and either make into rolls/boules/ batons or loaves place on/in your prefered baking tray/pan preheat oven to around 350f-375f and bake your bread for around 30-45 minutes. I do suggest checking them by turning them out of their tray/pan and thumping on the bottom if you hear a hallow sound they are done if you don’t check it every 10 minutes until done.
Goulash. Family Recipe
This is a very simple recipe that has been in my family since my dad was a kid and you only need 3 ingredients. Ground beef any amount will do. Canned stewed tomatoes. Use as many cans as you like. Cooked elbow macaroni enough for the amount of people you want to feed. To be fair any pasta will work for this. Brown ground beef in a pan on low I personally use a higher fat content beef and I use no cooking oil what so ever to brown it. Add stewed tomatoes (we kind of crush them a little bit in our hand before adding to the beef) and cook that down just a wee bit maybe 2-4 minutes. Then add your cooked macaroni or whatever pasta your using give a few good mixes and bam! your done! I do suggest eating it with a good sourdough but then again that what we have always done.
I know this post is most likely not one of my decent blog posts but I did want to put a little something out I am hopeful that the next post will be better and hopefully there will be better deals at the store this coming week! Until then thank you for reading and have a wonderful day/week/month!
