I love the clearance aisle at stores even if I save just shy of a dollar its still worth it to me. Yesterday we had to make a trip to Laramie to pick up so medicines from one of the local pharmacies & we went to walmart, the clearance aisle there had a few cooking and baking items on clearance from pot and pan sets down to single baking pans. I came away with 2 twin packs of mini loaf pans by pioneer woman for $3 (originally $4.98), a 3-piece baking tray (tray, silicon mat and cooling rack) also by pioneer woman for $6 (originally $18.98), a large silcon muffin pan for $4.50 (Originally $13.44) and 2 of walmarts on basic cheap square pans for $2 (originally $2.98). I also found some little boys shorts and tank tops for $1 each! So I grabbed 3 pairs of shorts (originally $5.98 each) and 2 tank tops (originally $2.98). I believe altogether if I did the math right I saved some where around $46 before taxes on everything, so I am pretty happy I just wish they had more of the pioneer woman stuff on clearance as I do like the floral stuff of her line.
I also like finding meat on clearance (I mean who doesn’t?) we went earlier in the month to Rawlins and we found some meat on clearance at the city market including thin cut pork chops for a couple of bucks for around I believe 1.5lbs of them. they had really lean ground beef for $3.50 for a pound and $3.15 for a pound of ground chicken and the same for ground turkey. I will say I personally find the city market and the walmart in Rawlins normally have better food clearances vs Laramie (most likely because Laramie has the University i.e lots of people). So if your ever in Rawlins or Laramie you might find some pretty good deals!
Now as everyone knows things have gotten a little more tense (I know thats most likely putting it mildly) in the world with everything that is going on, the family has agreed to increase on buying more shelf stable food as well as letting me can more of the meats we find on clearance. I do recommend a few products that have a long shelf life, I recommend Augason farms beef flavored meat substitute they currently don’t have it in stock on amazon and unsure about it directly from the company but it does make really good chilli! I also suggest their vegetable medley blend as it works great in soups and stews (it also smelled really good when I opened the can!), I also suggest the butter powder from them as well! I do plan on trying to buy more of the meat substitute as again it makes good chilli, as well as the butter powder and vegetable medley I do suggest buying the later 2 items on amazon as normally it’s cheaper there then via their own website and it’s cheaper there then at the few local stores that carry some of their goods.
Now with all that said I am looking into buying cheese making equipment and making my own cheese by this fall/winter. I also was given a plastic dehydrator awhile back, it’s one of those cheap round plastic ones that only has a low or high heat setting on it. I am going to give it a try here soon to see how well it actually works, I really wish I had my nice metal one that lets me adjust the temp sadly that is still in the UK but with luck I should have it here this time next year. We are saving up for a freeze dryer and hopefully it won’t be too long before we can get one, we are looking at harvest right freeze dryers in the medium size range with any luck this time next year we will also have a freeze dryer! We are going to see about doing what is called water glassing for our eggs as well that way if we have extra eggs we can preserve some and see if that will work for us. I did say in my previous post about possibly posting some photos of our chicken run and coop I have decided to put it off for a bit as we are now talking about painting it, which I know we should have done before we put the whole thing together but uh yea thats life we just wanted to get it up so we could move the birds out of the house into a much larger area so they could be happier an have way more room. So maybe by Oct/Nov we will have it painted and I will get some pictures up, no promises though as life does get out of control at times. Until my next random ramblings post have a great day & a fantastic week.
